Fashion Friday: Say No To The Flower Crown This Festival Season & Yes To These Chic Alternatives

Silly fashion trends usually spring to life and wilt away quickly, but sometimes the really stubborn ones manage to stay alive far longer than they should. Like an annoying weed in an otherwise beautiful garden, their staying power is remarkable: I’m looking at you, flower crowns.

I was surprised to learn this week that the tradition of sporting flower crowns is actually nothing new at all. Young maidens have been decorating their heads with garlands of freshly picked flowers for hundreds of years to celebrate the spring equinox and ensure another year of prosperity. But the tradition of pairing plastic flower crowns with cheeky shorts and a crop top so that you can look like every other basic girl at a festival — that’s all on you Coachella!

With the first weekend of Coachella kicking off this Friday, April 10, I thought it would be fun to explore some ideas for alternate head gear. The flower crown is so 2013/2014, don’t get stuck in a fashion rut. Unless you’re going to make one yourself with fresh flowers, in which case I wish you a very long and prosperous festival season because damn girl, that’s dedication to your craft.

Boater hat

Coachella bills itself as a “music and arts festival” so why not walk into the place looking like you walked right out of a Renoir painting? Wide-brim boater hats are having a moment this season, so you’ll look very on trend. Plus, that wider brim will give you more sun blockage!

Floppy hat

Easy, fun, and oh-so-very bohemian, this style is perfect for a festival like Coachella. These offer a ‘70s vibe that will give any outfit a glam boost. Just beware that those standing near you during a set will most likely hate your guts.

Head turban

In my humble opinion Eva Mendes single-handedly made the mini turban look chic again, and I’m so glad she did! There’s something distinctly casual about rocking this look, but it’s still unexpected enough to help you stand out. Opt for a bright color or festive print.

Cap

No, I don’t mean that you should dust off that Von Dutch hat from the very depths of your middle school nightmare. But a really dope cap in an unexpected material (leather is obviously my preference) or covered in an intriguing print is a great option to add a bit of playful androgyny to your look, if you’re into that aesthetic. If you like a sporty look, this is for you!
